Main Functions of a Generator Enclosure

The main functions of a generator enclosure include weather protection, sound reduction and safety.  Many major generator suppliers use designations such as level I, II or III, but have significant differences.

Some enclosures used the level designation for sound reduction, others for weather protection. There are a multitude of options within these base categories that many engineers and end-users may not be aware of. The material used (ex. steel/aluminum), protective coatings, insulation, self-contained exhaust as well as hardware, can be important features an application may benefit from.

With the added inconsistency potential of an outside source for the enclosure it is important to look at the enclosure as a significant portion of the overall value provided by the unit.

Beside the physical features listed, it is recommended that data be provided for the enclosures sound attenuation rating listed in dB at multiple points, access to key service locations and exhaust, as well as ability to drain water and keep the critters out. For those living in high wind or areas of dangerous seismic activity, laws are generally in place to keep the customer from receiving an unfit enclosure for these specific requirements, however the details of materials and construction should be carefully examined.
