Once the generator is up to rated speed and voltage (a matter of seconds), a transfer switch will automatically connect all your critical loads to the standby power supply.

The standby generator continuously monitors the grid and when it senses the return of utility power, it will automatically transfer the load back to the grid, and shut down.
